The smaller forced bet, posted by the player directly to the left of the dealer button.
The small blind acts second to last preflop and first on every later street. That makes it the worst seat at the table. Even good players lose money from the small blind over time; the goal is to lose as little as possible.
Example
In a $1/$2 game the small blind posts $1 and needs $1 more to call the big blind.
