Adults only
Our guides are for adults. Real-money gambling is legal only above the age set where you live: 18 in most of Europe and Canada, 19 in most Canadian provinces including Ontario, and 21 in most US states that allow online poker. Online poker is not legal everywhere, so check the rules where you live before you play.
Keep it a game
- Decide how much you can afford to lose before you start, and stop when it is gone.
- Set a time limit as well as a money limit.
- Never chase losses by moving up in stakes.
- Do not play when you are upset, tired or drinking. That state has a name: tilt.
- Never borrow money or use money meant for bills to play.
- Use the deposit limits, time reminders and self-exclusion tools that licensed poker rooms must offer.
Warning signs
Consider talking to someone if you notice any of these:
- You spend more money or time on poker than you meant to.
- You hide your playing from people close to you.
- You feel restless or irritable when you try to cut down.
- You play to escape problems or to win back losses.
- Poker is affecting your work, studies, sleep or relationships.
