Kicker
A side card that is not part of the main combination but breaks ties between equal hands.
If two players have the same pair, the highest unpaired card decides the pot. Kicker problems are the classic trap for hands like A-9: you hit your Ace and lose to A-K.
Only five cards play. If your kicker is lower than the board's fifth-best card, it does not play at all.
Example
On A8532, AK beats AJ: same pair of Aces, but King kicker beats Jack kicker.
Questions players ask
- Do kickers count in a full house or flush?
- No kicker is needed in a full house or straight, since all five cards are part of the combination. A flush is compared card by card from the top, so every card matters.
