The full set of hands a player could have in a given situation.
Strong players do not try to guess one exact hand. They think "this player opens about 20% of hands from the cutoff, and calling my raise narrows that to pairs and strong Broadway cards". Thinking in ranges is the biggest shift from beginner to intermediate play.
